Jubilee

Today, the 11 Winston-Salem Freedom Schools came together to celebrate literacy, learning, and community. The event was called Jubilee—a beautiful biblical reference to liberty, restoration, and the cancellation of debts. The Bible Project describes Jubilee as a radical year of release, and the word itself has become synonymous with the celebration of good news.

We were honored to play a small part in the day by providing refreshments for the middle and high school scholars who gathered early to prepare for the festivities and to help lead the younger students throughout the event. We delivered 240 ice-cold cans of refreshments, and they were received with great excitement.

By the time the celebration officially kicked off after lunch, organizers were expecting a crowd of more than 700 participants. It was inspiring to witness so many young people from across Winston-Salem come together in a spirit of joy, leadership, and learning.

Events like Jubilee remind us that literacy is about more than reading—it is about empowering young people, building community, and sharing good news with the next generation.
